Thesis (D.Min.)--Biola University, 2013.
The majority of churches in North America have become preoccupied with meeting their own needs. This is evidenced by the fact that 80 to 85 percent of churches are plateaued or in decline. This is the natural tendency of organizations as they progressively age through their life cycles. Apart from intentional effort to fulfill its mission and advance its vision, the church slips into maintaining programs to meet its own needs. As the organization continues to decline, it is unable to keep things going and eventually dies. Fortunately, churches are able to start a new life cycle by returning to their mission with an outward-focused vision.

To assess the potential for refocusing churches outward, this thesis-project answers the question: Will a one-year process of coaching transition a church from an inward to an outward focus? It used a pre- and post-test evaluation of sixteen churches from Mission Northeast, an association of 240 Conservative Baptist Churches located in the seven-state region of New York and New England. A Ministry Focus Survey was designed using a Likert rating scale, a Life Cycle Assessment tool, and general information related to the growth and decline of each participating church. Church leaders had the option of participating in the pre- and post-survey evaluation, attending a training seminar, and being involved in a coaching experience from a few days to an entire year.

The thesis discovered that coaching does have a positive effect in helping an ingrown church restore an outward focused vision. In addition, coaching helps some churches develop a new life cycle. Three important findings were noted from the research. First, the amount of coaching and training has a direct effect on the progress each church makes toward refocusing its mission. Churches that received the largest amount of coaching also saw the greatest degree of change. Second, coaching and training is most effective when it targets specific issues rather than general ones. While targeting general church health issues is not a bad thing to do, doing so did not have a direct effect on a church's ministry focus nor its place on the life cycle. Third, churches must have capable leadership to implement and follow through on the insights learned from coaching and training. While coaching and training are important, without local leaders who can implement changes, nothing much happens.
