The current status of criminology is in a state of theoretical weakness for its lack in new theoretical explanations on understanding crime and issues in the administration of justice. More important, criminological knowledge has become dormant in addressing the administration of justice in any critical contemporary manner because of unresolved ontological and epistemological conflicts. This issue has had grave concern regarding the contemporary legitimacy of criminology as a viable academic discipline. The present study examines the governance of mainstream criminological thought to see whether or not there is a dominant theme currently governing the orchestration and understanding of criminological knowledge. The results show that not only is mainstream criminology an embodiment of the status quo, but it is also in conflict with critical criminological perspectives. Furthermore, results suggest that neo-liberalism may play a pivotal role in understanding the conflict within criminological inquiry.
