Thesis (M.A.)--University of Kansas, 2013.
This research examines how different aspects of Twitter posts and user profiles may influence credibility assessment of news shared via Twitter. An online survey-based experiment was conducted to understand the roles of post content, username, profile image and user statistics in content consumers' evaluation of the credibility of Twitter posts. Actions associated with these credibility assessments were also analyzed including participants' willingness to click a provided link, retweet the post and disregard the information. ANOVA analysis conducted on young adults aged 18--28 suggests that users contributed higher credibility assessment to posts with correct grammar and spelling, a source or expert included in the post and a user profile with a casual profile image. In addition, the author found a higher credibility rating given to internet-stylized usernames than traditional or professional usernames, which differs from previous research that encompassed an older population.
