Demographic studies revealed that African Americans share a very small portion of the small business industry mainly because they face many challenges such as lack of early exposure, training, funding for the business, and risk factors to name a few. A phenomenological design was used to gain a better understanding of African American entrepreneurial decision-making process and how the decisions affected the eventual outcome of success. The study examined 26 African Americans perceptions on decision-making that lead them to attempt a business venture. The semi-structured interviews addressed the events, feelings, experiences, motivation, and thoughts that influenced the entrepreneurial decision. The results of the study revealed seven emergent themes from these business owners: entrepreneur background, entrepreneurial exposure, education and experience of entrepreneurs, entrepreneur's personal characteristics, entrepreneur resources, entrepreneur's obstacles, and entrepreneur's success factors. Findings of the study clearly indicated that African Americans faced more challenges than their counterparts and thus slowed their progress to become entrepreneurs and be successful. As a result of the study a basis for further development of entrepreneurial policy making in school programs is needed in order to provide the necessary training and mentoring that will encourage and support a successful business experience.
