Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2013.
A paucity of empirical research regarding motivation of and strategies for success of African American entrepreneurs has produced a dearth in the literature. With a diminishing economy, entrepreneurial ventures can play a significant role in economic growth. Focused research is crucial to augment existing knowledge. This study, modeled after the research of Dr. Tyria A. Stone (2012) titled Motivation and Success Strategies: A Phenomenological Study of African American Entrepreneurial Business Owners in Dayton, Ohio, utilized a different geographic location and compared the results. The purpose was to record motivation and success strategies employed by African American entrepreneurs in a cosmopolitan city in Alabama. Four research questions were employed to identify the motivation and success strategies of the participant group and how those strategies were applied. Phenomenological in design, data collection captured the lived experiences of the participants correlating with their own successful businesses and the research questions. Credentials for participation were location and duration of businesses, fiscal performance, and inclination to participate. Altruism was the overarching theme for both motivation and success strategies with family expectations the second highest motivation for participants. An unwillingness to fail was a strongly expressed motivation. Strategies for success identified family, helping others, and doing what one loves. Results compared between this study and Stone's (2012) revealed a number of similarities between the motivation and success strategies of African American entrepreneurs, regardless of geographic location. The resulting knowledge contributes to the scholarship and offers a footing for future research on the motivations and strategies for success of African American entrepreneurs.
