Childhood obesity is a prevalent problem in the United States and is related to a variety of negative medical, social, and psychological outcomes. There is comprehensive literature on weight-based teasing and weight stigmatization; however, due to several methodological flaws the effect of these constructs on younger children of different weight statuses is unclear. This study aimed to further explore these constructs in a community based sample of elementary school aged children and identify protective factors, such as coping skills, to help attenuate the negative social and psychological effects on children's social competence. Two-hundred and thirty-two 2nd-6th grade students from four elementary schools completed self and peer report measures of peer victimization, weight-based teasing, coping skills, weight stigma, and social competence. Results suggest that overweight children were largely unaffected by weight-based teasing and only obese children experienced significant amounts of weight-based teasing. Moreover, regardless of the participant's own weight status, all children indicated greatest stigmatization toward the overweight illustrations. On certain domains, obese children were considered to be less socially competent than their normal weight and overweight peers. Finally, coping skills were not found to moderate the relationship between weight status and peer assessment of social competence. These findings highlight the importance of understanding the effect of weight status on children's social and psychological development, as only the obese children in this sample experienced the negative social and psychological outcomes associated with increased weight status. Further research should continue to explore protective factors that may reduce the harmful impact of weight on children's social and psychological development.
