Shame and psychosocial difficulties are reported as issues of concern for sexual minority females due to the negative impact of heterosexism, internalized homophobia, sexual stigma, and sexual minority stress. Shame is also associated with the sexual minority identity developmental process which occurs within a female's broader psychosocial development. The relationship between psychosocial development and shame has not been explored within this population. This study examined how all stages of psychosocial development, as defined by Erikson, predicted trait shame in religiously-affiliated sexual minority females. Low shame was reported. Psychosocial development as the sole predictor accounted for a large amount of shame variance. Sexual minority females did not differ from non-sexual minority females on total positive psychosocial resolution but scored significantly higher on total negative resolution.
