Federal laws enacted to protect women and their children from domestic violence, which in some cases include efforts to educate families, have been largely ineffective, particularly among African American homes where the rate of intimate partner violence is 2.5 times that of the general population. Childhood exposure to domestic violence creates a cascade of problems in the African American community that contribute to the generational cycle of domestic violence. This study contributes to the body of knowledge necessary to address the societal problems associated with the effects of domestic violence exposure within the African American community. The theoretical frameworks for this study were social learning and differential association. Research questions focused on understanding the experience of domestic violence exposure and the residual effects of the exposure in the lives of adults who were exposed as children. A qualitative phenomenological study design was employed, utilizing a focus group and semistructured interviews of 5 African American participants who were exposed to domestic violence as children. Data from the focus group and interviews were coded using the inductive process. Findings indicate victims of childhood domestic violence believe their current and ongoing adult problems are directly related to their exposure to domestic violence in childhood. Implications for positive social change include providing state governments and nonprofit organizations with vital information related to the long term effects of childhood victimization such that polices can be refined to better address the unique needs of this population, and practitioners and service providers better understand how to tailor services to victims.
