Thesis (M.A.)--Kean University, 2014.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, by 2030 the older population is expected to be twice as large as it was in 2000, growing from 35 million to 71.5 million (Humes, 2005). Ageism is the unequal treatment of seniors or elderly (65 years and older) based on stereotypical notions that could lead to discriminatory practices. The examination of secondary data from different sources such as U.S. Department of Commerce Economics and Statistics Administration, U.S. Bureau of the Census, statistics of Genworth Financial Inc., the AARP Public Policy Institute's statistics and reports, quantitative reports from nursing homes and online resources of scientific journals and books about the elderly in long term facilities, was used to find out how ageism affects the life of residents in nursing facilities, and what challenges these old people face. The literature demonstrates that ageism is still prevalent and affects the elderly, as an increasingly vulnerable group in our society. Ageism gives a rise to different forms of abuse such as physical, psychological, sexual abuse, financial exploitation or exploitative abuse, and neglect by caregivers toward the seniors in long-term facilities. The examination of the literature shows that retirement planning and long-term institutional care system have to be developed, modernized, and improved to help the increasing number of elderly in their later age. The government should realize the importance of developing, modernizing, and improving the retirement planning and long-term institutional care system to support and help elderly citizens in their later age.
