The purpose of this study was to explore factors that influence leaders' ethical behaviors in decision making. This study demonstrated that leaders' ethical decision-making was not determined at a face value. Parents, family, and religious influences appeared to be important factors that set the stage for nonprofit leaders' decision making. However, leadership trust and integrity are factors that influence leaders' ethical behaviors as well. The qualitative case study methodology was used to adequately understand the perceptions of effective and ethical leadership behaviors in decision making. The primary sources of data collection were in-depth interviews, observations, audiotapes recording, and note-taking. In order to gain insight into the lived experience of how leaders behave, nonprofit administrators were interviewed, using the conversational interview guide to describe leaders' ethical behaviors. The data analysis examined factors that described the behaviors of leaders in nonprofit organizations. The influences of organizational hierarchy, family, parents, and religious beliefs appeared to guide nonprofit leaders as they make ethical decisions of what they believe to be right or wrong. From the analysis, one essential leadership theory was constructed; the transformational leadership theory which focused on explaining leaders' decision making. Transformational leadership theory was beneficial to organizations concerned with developing organizational integrity and high ethical standards. The study concluded that the doctrine of justice, trust, integrity, fairness, and caring provided clarity about the moral values and behaviors important to leaders behaving ethically, and the significance of their decision making.
