This dissertation empirically examines the impact of stringent environmental regulations on net exports of pollution intensive industries. The problems studied in this dissertation include an examination of the conflict between the supporters of liberalized trade and advocates of environmental protection and a critical assessment of the way in which environmental regulations alter the pattern of trade in pollution intensive goods.

520 $a This study adopts a multi-factor, multi-good extension of the Heckscher-Ohlin-Vanek (HOV) framework of international trade to analyze the impacts of environmental regulations on the patterns of trade. The main difference between this approach and the methods utilized in previous studies is that this study regresses changes in environmental regulations on changes in net exports across five pollution intensive industries. The results obtained from our cross-sectional data analysis found evidence that proves strict environmental regulations reduce net exports of pollution-intensive goods. However, this study found inconclusive evidence to support the hypothesis that environmental regulations be harmonized across countries that participate in free trade agreements.
