Domestic violence is a serious problem in the United States, a problem that reportedly requires medical and mental health services. Domestic violence is recognized as criminal behavior and women remain the target of this type of violence. Women face many challenges as mothers, which are compounded by the negative effects of abuse. The purpose of this study was to explore the efficacy of individual therapy in the reduction of parental stress levels in mothers affected by domestic violence. The research focused on a convenience sample of seventy-eight charts from the Domestic Violence division of FSW Inc., which is a social service agency located in Bridgeport, Connecticut, which included existing and former clients. FSW Inc. utilized the Family Crisis Oriented Personal Evaluation Scale (F-Copes) and Parental Stress Index (PSI/SF), which measured the parental stress and coping skills of the mothers prior to and after services were rendered. Using data collected by FSW, Inc., forty-one client charts were analyzed and it appears that for this sample higher individual scores on the F-Copes indicated that clients possessed coping skills. Conversely lower scores on the PSI for this sample, indicated reduction of stress. Parental stress and family coping skill level results of Hispanic mothers were more significant than that of African American and White mothers. Implications for policy and practice are discussed.
