Thesis (M.S.W.)--Southern Connecticut State University, 2013.
The purpose of this study was to gain knowledge about SCSU students that participated in binge drinking and used Counseling Services. Information was derived from 202 intake forms completed by students when they first visited Counseling Services. The research explored differences among the demographics between students who binge drank and those that did not. It also determined whether binge drinking correlated to other selected variables on the intake form. Results showed that among females, 33.8% binge drank, and among males, 47.3% binge drank. Comparing students based on age, 33% of people age 20 and under indicated they binge drank versus 40% of people age 21 and older. Many more students participated in binge drinking (75) than indicated they thought binge drinking was a concern (17). The variables that showed significant correlations with binge drinking over the past two weeks were; having a sexual identity concern (r = .211), having a violent/aggressive behavior concern (r = .164); and marijuana use within the past 2 weeks (r = .238). The correlations for these variables were are all less than .3, and are considered small. The number of candidates who checked off these categories was also small. Therefore the practical significance of these correlations is very limited. One cannot conclude that these concerns or behavior correlate, cause or are the outcome of binge drinking.
