Elastomeric ethylene-propylene (EP) random copolymer (84% wt% P) nanocomposites filled with in situ synthesized magnetic nanoparticles were fabricated by a facile surfactant-free method. A pronounced enhancement of thermal stability was observed in air under thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA) due to radical oxygen trapping effect of iron nanopartilces (NPs). The softening and melting temperatures were determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Compared to the pure elastomer, the Young's modulus and the tensile strength increased for the nanocomposites reinforced with magnetic nanoparticles. The addition of nanoparticles increased the permittivity slightly. The melt rheology was also investigated. The viscoelasticity increased with the increasing particle loading and a large enhancement at 20 wt% loading was observed due to the rheological percolation. The nanocomposites were observed to exhibit particle-loading-dependent magnetic behaviors, with an increase of coercivity after the nanoparticles were embedded in the polymer matrix, arising from the increased interparticle distance and the polymer-particle interactions.
