This qualitative investigation uses qualitative methods to examine one-to-one private studio piano teaching in two Korean arts middle schools, involving students ages 12 to 16. The study begins with a discussion of the aesthetic theories of John Dewey, Susanne Langer, and Harry Broudy; pertinent information from these theories/pedagogies is then applied to the teaching methods and ideals of individual Korean private piano teachers. Included are discussions of the general music education theories of Bennett Reimer and David Elliott. Although the ideas of these two scholars differ, the former emphasizing listening to music and the latter emphasizing performance, each has derived his general attitudes toward music education from the emphasis on experience found in the ideas of John Dewey (Reimer also draws upon Broudy).

South Korean society has undergone tremendous change since the mid-20th century, and the contemporary processes of piano teaching and learning in Korea reflect the values and tensions of that changing society. Piano teaching and learning is a site (or space) in which the society's shifting constructs of class and prestige play out. Ideas about what should be taught and learned, including the role of aesthetics, are filtered through constructs of class and prestige.

The discussion of Korean piano teaching and learning, supported by an overview of the Korean culture and the Korean general public education system, leads to my observation of the Korean piano teachers who studied in the West. Interviews with both Korean and Russian piano teachers along with two Russian translators, interviews with the students and their parents, and school administrators, enhance the study. To support the qualitative strategy of this investigation, descriptions of studios, practice facilities, and performance halls have been provided, as well as observations of private lessons given by Korean teachers and visiting Russian teachers.

Apparent in this dissertation is the grueling school and living schedule of a typical teenage Korean piano student, preparing for acceptance at a prestigious Korean university that drives the curriculum of arts middle schools. Competition for advancement and social status is intense; however, in some instances, aesthetic education and competitiveness, can be mutually beneficial to teachers and students.
