This study is a sequential mixed methods study that also includes three mini-case studies for the purpose of portraying contemporary Thai views on the internationalization of higher education in Thailand and reflections on its status as an international education hub in the Southeast Asian region. An inductive analysis technique is used whereby views are solicited from select Thai faculty, administrators, and scholars rather than using a deductive prescriptive formulate to use for comparison.

The study begins with 23 in-depth, semi-structured interviews, followed by a quantitative survey constructed under the influence of the interview responses. The survey was distributed to 59 separate Thai higher education faculty and administrators from the 981 international higher education programs in existence. These data are complimented with mini-case studies of three of Thailand's most successful international programs to date: Chulalongkorn University; Mahidol University; and Payap University.

The study found that though many aspects of Thai international higher education programs receive heavy influence from both the American and European higher education systems, Thailand's role and leadership in the creation and launch of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) by 2015 gives it a unique context for its internationalization efforts. While English is designated as the language of all Thai international programs, its influence is further strengthened by it being also the current language of academia, international business, and the Internet, having global influence. Thailand's interest in and efforts towards internationalization and becoming an important hub in the region are numerous. It is found that unfortunately these efforts seem highly fragmented from one higher education institution to another without a formal, integrated, systematic and structured influence from the Thai government.
