Thesis (M.A.)--Hofstra University, 2012.
This study examined pre-service teachers working with small groups of third and fourth grade students with a focus on mathematics. The group of student participants was comprised of classes from three different school districts. The pre-service teachers were all from the same higher education institution. The focus of this exploration was to determine the ways in which teachers' questioning techniques affect student learning when faced with a discovery learning challenge. This study was designed to determine whether or not the types of questions would ultimately affect student performance. The conclusions of this study suggest that pre-service teachers' questioning skills are related to student's ability to draw meaningful conclusions and express relationships between circumference and diameter. Assessment scores and observations present 100% student achievement, however, when further analyzed for depth of knowledge vs. strictly vocabulary acquisition, the extent of the achievement differs based upon the types of questions asked by the teacher.
