Thesis (M.S.)--Oklahoma State University, 2013.
Franchising has long been considered one of the critical success factors in the lodging industry. However, no conclusive answer exists as to what conditions determine the effectiveness of franchising. The purpose of this study is to 1) to investigate whether a firm's internal competencies (i.e., agency-related, resource-related and risk-related competencies) influence the use of franchising strategy in the lodging industry and 2) to examine which internal competency is the most effective in improving the effect of the franchising strategy on a firm's performance. Data have been collected from firms' annual reports from 2003 to 2012, providing ten-year panel data. The analyses of data for this study have been conducted using multiple regression and hierarchical multiple regression.

The results indicate that lodging firms are likely to franchise businesses regardless of the levels of their internal competencies. However, the findings suggest that internal competencies determine the degree of success in franchising. It has been determined that a positive relationship exists between franchising and hotel performance. However, agency-related, resource-related, and risk-related competencies negatively moderate the relationship between the firm's franchising and its performance.

This study supports the importance of internal competency for better performance results in franchising; it further aims to understand why franchising strategy is not equally effective. While franchising strategy generally leads to positive performance, the findings help hotel executives to understand the conditions under which the effects upon performance can be maximized. Accordingly, the findings will assist executives in making a more appropriate strategic choice prior to expanding the number of units in the market place.
