Thesis (M.A.)--Kean University, 2013.
This is a project for the completion of a Master's thesis project. The project addresses the role of culture and acculturation processes in the conceptualization of the self in Asian-Americans of East Asian descent. This group in particular was chosen due to the presence of a dialectical view of the self which is distinctly different from the European-American's synthesis view of the self. The current research investigates whether isolation and integration acculturation strategies will be correlated with a dialectical view of the self (H1), if a dialectical view of the self will be correlated with lower levels of acculturative stress (H2), and whether global self-esteem will be less accurate than collective self-esteem in predicting self esteem related motivations and self perceptions in participants with a dialectical view of the self (H3). The results did not support any of the hypotheses, but acculturative stress was found to be negatively correlated with private collective self-esteem. Implications for counseling techniques are discussed.
