The purpose of this investigation was to identify associated correlates of depressive affect among unmarried older adults. One key goal of this study was to determine whether social support, loneliness, and religiosity operate in tandem and have an associated and differential influence on depressive affect of unmarried older adults. Data were acquired from N = 227 ( n = 66 men; n = 161 women) participants classified as never-married, divorced, and widowed residing in community settings. IBM/SPSS 19.0 was used to conduct a univariate analysis to determine group mean differences. Furthermore, hierarchical regression analyses were computed to assess effects of key study variables on depressive affect. Mean comparisons across study variables revealed no significant differences by age group, gender, or marital status. However, loneliness and perceived health status emerged as significant associated indicators of depressive affect among unmarried older adults. Overall, results indicate that social support helps to decrease depressive affect when unmarried older adults experience feelings of loneliness.
