There is conflicting research concerning social anxiety in Asian Americans. Some studies argue Asian Americans suffer from high levels of social anxiety, while others have found no ethnic differences in social anxiety between Asian Americans and European Americans. This study examined whether negative mood regulation expectancies (NMRE), -- one's belief that one can control one's unpleasant emotions, -- ethnicity, self-construal, and social anxiety were related to assertiveness in 72 Asian Americans and 60 European Americans. Self-construal is the definition of the self based on one's role in the community. Though social anxiety did not differ by ethnicity, NMRE and independent self-construal -- a sense of self that emphasizes autonomy -- significantly predicted social anxiety. Independent self-construal, ethnicity, and social anxiety significantly predicted assertiveness. People who were more autonomous and confident they can regulate their moods were less socially anxious. People who were less socially anxious and more autonomous were more assertive. Together, these findings suggest the usefulness of assessing both NMRE and self-construal when studying social anxiety and assertiveness. My results add to the conflicting literature on social anxiety in Asian Americans by being consistent with some previous studies, but diverging from others.
