Thesis (Educat.D.)--Gonzaga University, 1986.
The purpose of the study was to present recreation activities and examine the effects of activity programming on persons with Alzheimer's Disease at three classification levels. These classification levels were taken from Dr. Berger's Senility Severity Scale. Recreation activities in three specific categories were presented: table and board games, gross motor activities and arts and crafts. Six observable response categories were defined: (1) fine motor; (2) gross motor; (3) expressive communication; (4) receptive communication; (5) cognitive skills; and (6) social behaviors. Persons from three types of program options were involved in the study: a skilled nursing facility, an adult daycare center and a state institution. A sample of 73 persons with Alzheimer's Disease at three senility severity levels was involved in the study.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The activity leaders in the program options led the activities and recorded the responses. The responses in the observable response categories to specific activities were described by a frequency table. The response by program option and senility level were analyzed by chi-square. Each activity leader kept an oral log which discussed the responses of persons with Alzheimer's Disease to the specific activities presented.

A wide range of responses was noted in the frequency tables. Responses indicated that persons with Alzheimer's Disease are often able to participate in activities. Data analyzed by program option in the observable response category showed a significant difference in five of the six observable response categories. Data analyzed by senility level in the observable response categories showed a significant difference in five of the six observable response categories. Gross motor skills showed no significant difference across three senility severity levels. The oral logs kept by the activity leaders indicated that persons with Alzheimer's Disease have perception problems when trying to participate in the board games.

Further study is needed to define the differences in each of the program options where Alzheimer's Disease persons are placed. The base of activities offered should be broadened.
