Thesis (M.A.S.E.)--Caldwell College, 2013.
Children with autism experience distinct deficits in the area of play. The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of a picture activity schedule with the intention of improving the independent play skills of a preschooler with autism. The student under study, a 3 year 4 month old male in a self-contained preschool ABA classroom, exhibited low levels of appropriate play and high levels of stereotypy when in unstructured play situations. A three-phase experimental design was used to evaluate the effectiveness of this intervention. Two dependent variables were measured: length of time spent engaged in appropriate play and occurrences of stereotypy. The results of the study showed that the child improved in his ability to engage in purposeful play, in his ability to transition between activities, and, finally, that he exhibited more appropriate behaviors in free play situations when he was able to apply his picture activity schedule. Results of this study support the existing literature with regard to the benefits of using picture activity schedules with children with autism.
