Recent approaches to informed, critical discussions of artworks by art educators and classroom teachers have become widely employed in the present-day American educational system. However, all existing methods of critical discussion were developed for traditional, two-dimensional artworks. When educators sought to discuss three-dimensional artworks, they merely transferred the method developed for critically discussing two-dimensional artworks to three-dimensional ones.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The purpose of this study is to examine how the act of transferability implicitly assumes that all artworks, whether two-dimensional or three-dimensional in nature, can be critically discussed using the same set of criteria. This study then proposes an approach that is designed specifically for the needs and interests of contemporary three-dimensional artworks. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is compared and contrasted to the effectiveness of other existing approaches to demonstrate how the proposed approach more accurately and completely discusses contemporary three-dimensional artworks.
