Thesis (M.A.)--Sotheby's Institute of Art - New York, 2013.
The early 1990s witnessed an explosion in the relatively new market for online shopping and e-commerce. While the so-called dotcom bubble burst in early 2000, e-commerce is now an over $160 billion industry. Through a series of three case studies, this thesis looks at how the art world is adapting to e-commerce. Classified into a taxonomy that draws on the real world and brick-and-mortar institutions of the auction, the art adviser/social curator, and the discount print shop, it examines the propositions and mechanics of e-commerce sites Saffronart, Paddle8, and 20x200 respectively. While these and other platforms are often spoken about in the media and the art world, there is little research that looks at them within the context of each other. Distilling cross platform keys to success, this thesis concludes with areas for future business development and research.
