Thesis (M.A.)--Sotheby's Institute of Art - New York, 2013.
This paper provides an in depth look at Brazil, its artists, exhibitions, scholarship, and the auction market for Brazilian works of art. It explores how cultural development has taken place within Brazil, leading to international interest in Brazilian art and higher auction prices. It begins by discussing cultural development in Brazil over the twentieth century, from the beginnings of Modernism up to what is happening in the Contemporary art scene today. It then transitions into how this development has spurred an increase in exhibitions and scholarship outside of Brazil, as seen through a few specific curators, institutions, and exhibitions. Finally, the study shows how the prices and depth have increased in the auction market in recent years, which would not have been possible without the increased interest in Brazil through its cultural development and international exhibitions. It finishes with future predictions of the direction in which all of these factors are headed.
