Thesis (M.A.)--California State University, Fullerton, 2013.
Peter Maxwell Davies's opera for child and adult performers, The Two Fiddlers, based on a story by local Orkney poet George Mackay Brown and taken from local Orkney folklore, premiered at the second St. Magnus Festival in 1978 in Kirkwall, Orkney, and showcased Orkney in both its music and plot. In The Two Fiddlers, Davies adopts a hybrid style of composition, borrowing, reworking, or inventing Scottish folk or quasi-folk tunes and dances. He applies modernist and postmodern musical approaches and devices such as parody, paraphrase, and quotation in a horizontal, rapidly shifting collage of disparate sounds and compositional styles (instead of a simultaneous collage), albeit in a musically substantial but accessible manner. Davies intended that The Two Fiddlers would provide the children of Kirkwall, Orkney with a challenging and memorable musical performance experience and that local and visiting attendees at the international festival he had founded the previous year would appreciate it as an important addition to the literature of operas for children. This thesis focuses particularly on an analysis of the musical dance elements in this opera.
