Asperger Syndrome, which is also called Asperger's Disorder or autistic psychopathy, belongs to a group of disorders known as pervasive developmental disorders (PDD) or autistic spectrum disorders. The diagnosis of Asperger Syndrome is complicated due to a lack of standardized diagnostic criteria. Since Asperger Syndrome is not often identified in early childhood, and many individuals are not diagnosed until they are adults, parents have the most important role in the early recognition and evaluation of Asperger Syndrome. With the drastic increase in children diagnosed with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder, there remains very little research on the parents themselves. Assisting in the articulation of the lived experiences of parents is an acceptable first step in potentially uncovering knowledge into this disorder.

This study investigated the self reports of 12 volunteer parents in the New York City metro area with a child diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome utilizing the phenomenological method of inquiry including observation and one-on-one interviews. The main purpose was to explore the lived experience of parents of children diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome. Qualitative responses were analyzed using a long table approach. Data was presented descriptively. The central theme that emerged from the data was "defining reality" as a salient theme for the participants. Parents interviewed described a process of meaning making with respect to standards both within and beyond the familial environment. Parents highlighted several key points that contributed to their overall experience. These included developmental issues with their child, unusual skills, peer and sibling relationships, routine, behavioral and emotional concerns, as well as the actual diagnostic process. This study provides valuable insight into the parental perceptions. Key findings highlight the complexity of the parental experience and therefore have implications for professional practice.
