The analysis of secondary data was used to examine the relationship between self-esteem and career options. Items from the Rosenburg Self-esteem scale and Holland's Self-Directed Search inventory was used on a sample of 112 African American high school students. It was hypothesized that there was a relationship between self-esteem and career options. There was also a prediction that gender differences existed amongst the variables. A point biserial correlation yielded a significant relationship between R type (Realistic) and self-esteem. An independent T-test yielded a non-significant relationship between self-esteem and gender. The Chi-Square analysis, however, indicated that there was a strong significant relationship between gender and career options. Limitations to the study, as well as the results indicating further implications about African American high school students and the variables that influence career decision-making were discussed.
