Thesis (M.A.)--The University of Regina (Canada), 2009.
The research conducted for this paper was influenced by work done on reproductive decision-making during the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s in Canada, the United States and Australia. Qualitative research techniques were used in this study to obtain data on voluntarily childless women in Canada. In-depth, life-history narratives were provided in interviews with twelve childless women who, at the time, were capable of childbearing, had reached menopause and/or had been permanently sterilized. The women were between the ages of twenty-four and sixty-five and all lived in Saskatchewan.

Drawing on the work of Berger (1963), Butler (2003), Heitlinger (1991), Woollen and Boyle (2000), Shaw (2001), Maher and Saugeres (2007), I examine the social mechanisms that contributed to the respondents' given experiences of childlessness, these include gender ideologies, norms, stereotypes and methods of negotiation. To assist in my analysis, I draw upon works done by Yoder (1999), Park (2002), Gillespie (2003), Somers (1993), Houscknecht (1979), Callan (2001), Calhoun and Selby (1980), Mueller and Yoder (1999). Popular literature is also utilized in the literature review and in the analysis section.

Using the narratives I demonstrate that gender ideologies exist in Canadian society and that the primary social expectations that they assume centre on motherhood. With the information acquired in the interviews, I explain how the ideology of ideal mothering and consequent ideas about childrearing influence fertility decision-making. I also define the feminine ideal, in relation to motherhood, and discuss the effect of this feminine ideal on women who choose not to have children. I then go on to outline various negotiation and coping strategies that childless women adopt and employ in response to the stereotyping that they experience because of their decision not to have children. Limitations of this research are discussed and its implications for future research are explored.
