This study examines the relation between risk exposures over the life course and hazard of mortality among 12,000 Union Army veterans aged 50 and over in 1900. Veterans' risk exposures earlier in life as approximated by birth season and country, residential location, height at enlistment, and occupation significantly influence their chance of survival after 1900. Former prisoners of war show an elevated risk of mortality in old age. Veterans' socioeconomic well-being circa 1900 as denoted by marital status, homeownership, and BMI also makes a significant difference in risk of mortality. A decomposition of survival after 1900 into two periods further suggests that whereas some of the effects such as born in Ireland, coming from big cities, and occupation at enlistment mainly influence survival between 1900 and 1910, effects from several other variables such as born in autumn, residential locations, and prisoner of war are more salient on survival after 1910. A sensitivity analysis of the effects of veterans' risk exposures prior to enlistment on their chance of survival in old age reveals that these effects are robust irrespective of whether or not wartime stress and socioeconomic well-being circa 1900 are taken into account. In relation to corresponding findings from more recent cohorts, the exceptional rigidity of the effects of early exposures on mortality among the veterans highlights the harshness of living conditions in their early life, which had an effect on survival that cannot be easily modified by socioeconomic conditions in later life.

Being a farmer at enlistment is associated with a significant advantage in old-age survival. Occupational immobility for manual labors, and to a less extent for artisans, is associated with an elevated risk of mortality. Changing jobs from non-professional to professional does not significantly influence the chance of survival in old age.

Veterans' exposures earlier in life rigidly shape their socioeconomic well-being in old age, and can thus pose indirect effects on survival. However, these indirect effects are limited and do not constitute the primary pathways. The survival advantages for married veterans result from the benefits of marriage per se rather than from health selection prior to marriage.
