Within the field of jazz, perhaps no female artist has evoked such emotion as Billie Holiday (1915-1959). With an unprecedented vocal delivery of undeniable pathos, Lady Day, as she was often called, left her indelible mark on the music world. Her legacy exemplifies how life can be transparent through art. To separate Holiday's personal experiences from her music is to miss what she imparted to the world. Her lyrics speak of a life wrought with love-gone-wrong, poverty, and prejudice. All of these realities were true about Holiday. She lived them. She knew them well. She brought them to audiences who could sense her fragility and hence, their own. The strong correlation between Holiday's personal battles and the sentiments contained in her music, no doubt, contributed to her authenticity as a performer. This study examines this phenomenon in depth, making use of primary and secondary sources.
