Thesis (M.L.A.)--The University of Texas at Arlington, 2005.
A growing body of current economic research asserts that the future belongs to those cities that provide a nurturing environment for ideas, creativity and, by extension, commerce (Florida, 2002). The physical design implications of this cultural and economic shift offer exciting opportunities for landscape architects engaged in urban place-making. This thesis identifies the key qualities, in terms of use patterns and physical design, which characterize a flourishing environment attractive to the affluent and mobile creative class.

Primary research methods included qualitative observational research and informal interviews in Seattle, Washington, D.C. and Austin, three cities considered Meccas for young creative professionals. The study offers several guiding principles rooted in the values of this group. It concludes with specific planning and design strategies intended to inform the decisions of public policy makers, business leaders and urban designers wishing to make their cities more viable in an economy of ideas.
