Thesis (Ph.D.)--Howard University, 2012.
African American faith-based women are among the 15 million reported caregivers providing care for their loved ones living with Alzheimer's disease or other related dementias (ADRD). Understanding the toll that this debilitating disease has on caregivers' health has become more important than ever for female caregivers to understand that their stressors and challenges can have a serious impact upon their health unless preventive measures are taken.

This study explores how the iPod (a MP3 listening and visual device), with a spiritually based program, can help to alleviate caregiver strain and grief. Ten African American faith-based female ADRD caregivers, under 65, described how the problem-solving intervention impacted their lives while caring for their loved ones with ADRD. The women discussed their challenges and stressors. After using the iPod for eight weeks, five themes emerged: The Intervention Gives Me Peace, The iPod Brings Great Relief , A Reminder: You Are Chosen to Serve, Health Information Too Overwhelming, and The Messages Work for Me.

The research was framed using Wallston et al. (1997) Multidimensional Health Locus of Control, in tandem with Folkman and Lazarus's (1984) Transactional Model of Stress and Coping. Each participant's burden and grief levels were evaluated using Zarit's (1985) Burden Interview and Marwit and Meuser's (2005) Caregiver Grief Inventory.
