Thesis (M.A.)--Roosevelt University, 2013.
This thesis examines Nella Larsen’s two novels, Quicksand and Passing, focusing specifically on criticisms that claim her endings are anti-climactic concessions to stereotypified tragic mulatta narratives. I contest that Larsen intended her endings to be read ironically. By drawing from Larsen’s own life experience, her position among other Harlem Renaissance authors, and earlier plot points in both novels, I illustrate how Larsen frames race, gender, and other socially constructed systems of definition as limiting and exclusionary. This frame culminates in the endings of her novels as both the heroines and the texts themselves succumb to “the ties of race.”
