The Slave craton of Canada contains a number of alkaline to subalkaline intrusions dated at ca. 2180 Ma, collectively known as the Southwest Slave magmatic province. The Blatchford Lake intrusive suite is the largest of this group and is host to the world class Thor Lake rare metal deposits, which includes the Nechalacho REE-Zr-Nb deposit. The Thor Lake rare metal deposits are hosted by a group of peralkaline granite to nepheline syenite phases of the Blatchford Lake intrusive suite, collectively known as the eastern lobe. The eastern lobe rocks crosscut an older alkaline-subalkaline suite of rocks, referred to as the western lobe. The western lobe comprises peridotite, gabbro, and metaluminous granite and syenite phases. Evidence is presented indicating a petrogenetic relationship between the two lobes, whereby the parental melts were derived from the melting of metasomatized isotopically-depleted lithospheric mantle. Interaction between melts from asthenosphere-derived amphibole-rich metasomatic veins, and host depleted lithospheric peridotite can account for the compositional spectrum and isotopic signatures observed in rocks of the eastern and western lobes of the Blatchford Lake intrusive suite, as well as other intrusions in the Southwest Slave magmatic province.

The lithologically distinct phases in the eastern and western lobes represent discrete punctuated pulses from unexposed deep-seated parental systems. Differentiation in the Blatchford Lake intrusive suite was largely controlled by crystal fractionation complemented by a significant degree of crustal assimilation. Crustal assimilants likely consist of lower crustal mafic rocks and local Archean granitoids. The emplacement conditions of granitoid phases of the western lobe suggest an upper crustal emplacement, with pressures of 4 - 4.5 kbar (∼16 km).

In the eastern lobe, the transition from the silica-oversaturated Grace Lake granite to the undersaturated Nechalacho layered suite reflects the progressive armouring of magmatic pathways from silica-rich country rocks. The Thor Lake rim syenite, an arcuate feature occurring near the contact of the Grace Lake granite and Thor Lake syenite, represents the basal remnants of an eroded ring dyke.

The two monzonite-diorite intrusive stocks hosted in the Grace Lake granite are chemically unrelated to the Blatchford Lake intrusive suite, and likely represent the northwestern extension of the Compton intrusive suite into the Slave province. Relations between diabase dykes and the intrusive stocks suggest that NW-trending diabase dykes in the region have a complex and protracted history.
