The Kirtland's Warbler (Setophaga kirtlandii) is an endangered bird species with specialized habitat requirements. It is found at only one known location in Canada; an active Army installation which possesses suitable habitat for the species. Suitable habitat characteristics were compared between sites occupied and not occupied by Kirtland's Warbler at Canadian Forces Base Petawawa (CFB Petawawa). Habitat variables including ground vegetation, tree species composition, forest stand age, and percentage of canopy cover were studied at all sites. The former and current military use of the occupied and unoccupied habitat was also considered, as a possible factor influencing the presence of suitable habitat for the species.

Habitat occupied by Kirtland's Warbler possessed significantly greater percent cover of low sweet blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium) (31.2 %), coral lichen (Cladina stellaris) (0.4 %), reindeer lichen (Cladonia rangiferina) (8.3 %), and wavy-leaved moss (Dicranum polysetum) (4.3 %), compared to unoccupied habitat. There was no significant difference in ground vegetation species richness or tree species composition between sites. Tree species composition included jack pine (Pinus banksiana), white pine (Pinus strobus ), red pine (Pinus resinosa), poplar (Populus tremuloides), and red maple (Acer rubra). Forest stands occupied by Kirtland's Warbler were significantly younger (less than 20 years old) and had significantly less canopy cover (less than 15 %) than unoccupied sites. Forest fires, caused by military training as well as artificial habitat regeneration, appears to have influenced the presence of preferred habitat characteristics as most occupied sites are contained within former fire zones and jack pine planting and seeding sites.
