The extent and frequency of contact initiation via e-mail was investigated in relationship to several professional and personal background characteristics, as well as proximity to other peer institutions. A web-based survey was employed to collect data from 583 professionals at 128 institutions in 46 different states and the District of Columbia. Frequencies and percentage distributions, as well as Chi Square statistical procedures, were used to analyze the data. While the frequency is quite low, results from the study suggest that many academic librarians will use e-mail to directly contact completely unacquainted or loosely acquainted peers for purposes of seeking help with active reference queries.
