Thesis (Ph.D.)--Northwestern University, 1999.
This dissertation attempts to bridge contradictory interpretations of Italian modernity by focusing on the industrialization of three towns in northern and central Italy (Valenza Po in Piedmont, Vicenza in the Veneto, and Arezzo in Tuscany) specializing in the production of gold jewelry in the 20 th century. The networks of small- to medium-size firms located in these remote towns have become the largest producers and exporters of gold jewelry in the world. Rather than viewing small-scale industrialization as the natural outcome of age-long traditions, this study demonstrates its contingent and conflictual character. Specific historical contingencies account for the remarkable differences between the economic structures and technical specializations of the three towns. But important similarities make it possible to regard these towns as instances of the same social world. Characterized by the coexistence of formal and informal relations, and of the vertical ties of patronage and the horizontal relations of class mobilization. The coexistence of formality and informality was the historical outcome of compromises between local elites and State authorities. The informal economy was also fostered by the development of interpersonal relations, which linked local actors and key agents who operated in the global market. The coexistence of patronage ties, instrumental in promoting trust, and collective action, crucial to the protection of clients from potential abuse of patrons' power, was part of the legacy of rural relations, especially of sharecropping (mezzadria) and its conflict-ridden demise in post-W.W.II Italy. By thriving on the ambiguities of social relations, the successful development of these towns challenges Weberian notions of modernity. And by demonstrating how actors adopt shifting strategies and create an ironical distance between themselves and the norms of their society, this study challenges Durkheimian notions of solidarity.
