Thesis (Ph.D.)--Texas A&M University, 1989.
During the early 1960s, a young Air Force physician worked quietly in a research laboratory at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Officially, his assignment was to develop a new physical conditioning program for the United States Air Force. Unofficially, the opportunity to conduct physical fitness testing on thousands of Air Force Personnel would, hopefully, confirm his belief that exercise was an important component of preventive medicine and a healthy lifestyle.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The purpose of this study was to investigate the work of Kenneth Cooper and his possible influence in promoting healthy lifestyles. Specifically, sub-problems related to: (a) aerobic exercise as a fundamental instrument of preventive medicine, (b) Cooper's impact as a possible influence in promoting healthy lifestyles, (c) the improved receptivity of Cooper's more recent holistic approach, and (d) the possible contribution of Cooper's program to the recent decline in coronary artery disease, were investigated.

The search for historical source material began with an interview with Kenneth Cooper on September 9, 1988. Additional sources of primary material included personal interviews with individuals associated with Cooper, either currently or in the past, personal visits to The Aerobics Center in Dallas, Texas, and Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, an analysis of Cooper's books and publications, and written material recognizing the work of Cooper.

The important findings of this study, as related to the four sub-problems investigated, included: (1) There has been a recent trend in the United States to develop a preventive medicine sub-speciality in health and fitness. In addition, the medical community's acceptance of the value of exercise in promoting health has improved during the past 15 years. (2) Cooper's nine books have sold over 17 million copies in 39 languages and in braille, and he is recognized as an important preventive medicine influence within the international, biomedical community. (3) Cooper's wellness programs constitute an integral component of his health promotion activities. (4) Increased participation in aerobic activity, a system of exercise discovered by Kenneth Cooper, is considered by experts to be a contributing factor to the recent decline in coronary artery disease.
