This interpretive study was undertaken to develop a better understanding of the lived experiences of young college-educated Taiwanese women employed as clerical workers. Hermeneutic phenomenology served as the research methodology to explore the meanings of the participants' lived experiences.

Participants were college-educated Taiwanese females holding jobs as clerical workers in Taiwan; chosen by a snow-ball sampling technique. Using in-depth interviews as the primary research method, participants were interviewed at least twice for periods of 90 to 120 minutes. Verbatim interview transcripts were reviewed using wholistic and selective thematic analysis approaches to find the themes. A reflective model was introduced to exam the finding themes.

Themes emerging from the systematic text analysis fell into two groups: experiences and expectations. Experience themes identified were: (a) bored and busy, (b) disrespected and mistrusted, (c) powerless and frustrated. As college-educated female clerical workers, these experiences described worker feelings of underutilization and inequitable treatment. Major expectation themes related to: (a) their career dreams and aspirations, and (b) their desire for meaningful work. Expectations reflected career aspirations of having a meaningful job, one that could fulfill their goals. These expectations also identified the career development needs of these young college-educated female clerical workers, especially the conflict between their ideals and the real world of work.

The participants' lived experiences were viewed by the researcher using a reflective model which considered: (a) social interactions, (b) personal characteristics, and (c) the interrelationship of the social interactions and personal characteristics. Basically, this reflective model took a wholistic view to explain and better understand the themes identified.

Reflecting on the study outcomes, the researcher suggested several uses for information: (a) gaining the attention of government policy makers about gender equity issues, (b) enlightening organizations about their underutilization of this valuable group of workers, (c) encouraging educators to revise and develop suitable Taiwanese career development curricula, and (d) empowering and encouraging these young college-educated clerical workers to develop themselves personally and professionally; such as organizing themselves to encourage better development opportunities and more equitable treatment in the workplace.
