The focus of this study is adult women's expectation of old age support from their children in rural China. The objectives of this study are to assess the distribution of expectation for elderly support in terms of the providers of support; to examine the role of fertility in the formation of adult women's expectations; and to assess the similarities between the determinants of the expectation of future support among younger cohorts and those influencing the support patterns of the currently elderly generation.

The major hypothesis of this study is that women's expectations of elderly support from children are not only a function of the quantity and quality of children and the availability of alternative resources, but also affected by the observation of old age support in the current old age generation. We hypothesize that the expected (actual) old age support in the young (old) cohorts is positively related to the number and quality of their children, and negatively related to their saving and income levels. Furthermore, I test whether the structural coefficients of the model of expectation are the same as those in the model of actual support in the old age group.

The theoretical framework for the study uses an overlapping generation utility maximization model. The data are extracted from a survey conducted in 1988 in two villages of China.

The results show that for younger adult women, children are still the most expected source for old age support. Following that is the support from husband. Very few women expect to get support from state welfare or nursing homes. Number of children is significantly and positively related to expectations of living with children and general support from children. Number of sons is significantly and positively related to expectations of economic support from children.

The significance of the study is to provide information that helps to coordinate the implementations of population policy and the social welfare policy for Chinese elderly generation. The further steps of this study should attempt to answer the question like how the expectation of old age support is connected with the actual intergenerational transfer behavior.
