Seventh-Grade students at inner-city Ridgecrest Middle School were part of the first group in their state required to pass a standardized test to graduate. A small minority of the students passed the seventh grade version of the test, which is considered to be an indicator of passing the high school version, at Ridgecrest. Furthermore, the test results typified community and school stratification: Students came from different neighborhoods surrounding the school, with upper-middle class White students given higher expectations and more challenging classes and poor Black students in regular classes with no expectations. White students tended to pass the test at much higher rates than Black students. The findings suggest that teachers at Ridgecrest care little about their subject matter or their students' achievement, view their students through negative stereotypes rather than realistic information, and generally set students up to fail in both school and life.Subjects--Topical Terms:
