Thesis (M.S.N.)--Pacific Lutheran University, 2003.
The purpose of this descriptive, explorative study was to gain insight in the experiences Norwegian nursing students gain by going abroad for one period of clinical studies in the basic nursing program. The study had a phenomenological-hermeneutical design, using qualitative interviews for data collection and analysis. Eleven nurses, graduating 1998 to 2002 were interviewed about their experiences abroad. All informants had experienced professional growth, and nine of the nursing students experienced personal growth as a result of their studies abroad. Key themes were needed for a support network to address cultural issues, especially ethical dilemmas in practice, language barriers, and differences in clinical practice.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Thesis findings suggest that evaluation tools for abroad experiences, as well as pre- and re-entry programs need to be developed.
