There is a need for an assessment tool for counselor ethics that meets acceptable psychometric standards. Such an instrument would provide information needed to determine areas of focus in regard to ethical issues in counselor training. Several empirical studies have used instruments without psychometric data, such as Barr (1970), Gibson and Pope (1993), James and DeVaney (1994), Robinson and Gross (1989), Swoboda et al., (1978), and Wasielewski and Scruggs (1999).Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a Participants were 41 school counselors. There was a period of one month between the test-retest administrations. The survey included demographic data, ethics-related scenarios, and the ethics quiz published by Huey, Salo, and Fox (1995).
520 $a This research examined three issues: (a) the test-retest reliability of the ethics quiz in measuring counselors' awareness of ethical standards; (b) the level of awareness of national ethical standards for this group of counselors; and (c) the difference between those who had taken a course in ethics in their training programs and those who had not.
520 $a Due to low variance, a factor analysis was conducted on both trials to determine if the same factor structure was repeated in both trials; the factor analysis resulted in two factors on the ethics quiz (responses to emotional expressions and professional boundaries in the therapeutic relationship) and two factors on the scenarios (teacher as the offender and student disclosing sexual abuse). Due to the lack of variance, the frequency tally method was used to examine the responses both trials; counselors gave the same answers for both trials 91% of the time.
520 $a Results indicated that the ethics quiz might be a reliable measure. Respondents who did not have an ethics course scored higher on the ethics quiz than those who had an ethics course in their training programs, but only on trial 2. Years experience was a more powerful predictor than having had an ethics course in one's training program. Counselors who scored higher on the ethics quiz were those who had more years experience. Those who scored lower had less experience even though they were more likely to have taken an ethics course in their training program.
