Thesis (Ph.D.)--The George Washington University, 2003.
This dissertation presents research conducted at the nexus of a need and opportunity: the need for a greater understanding of "work and life balance" amidst important indicators that such balance is lacking, and an opportunity provided by considerable advances in the cognitive sciences. Thus, this research suggests that worklife balance can be understood from a cognitive standpoint, whereby individuals may experience interfering thoughts and worries of work in nonwork time and in nonwork settings, associated with detachment from nonwork surroundings, a phenomenon this study labels the Cognitive Intrusion of Work (CIW). This study specified four goals: (1) to define and operationalize the CIW construct, (2) to develop a scale intended to measure the CIW, and provide preliminary evidence of construct validity, (3) to demonstrate empirically the existence of the CIW, and (4) to showcase the soundness of a cognitive approach to the study of work-life balance. In order to meet these objectives, this study adopted a quantitative research design using a cross-sectional survey of a sample of knowledge workers, members of various associations or employed at various organizations. Factor analysis of the items comprising the CIW Scale (CIWS) resulted in a three-factor solution, composed of the following dimensions: (1) Work-Life Cognitive Conflict, (2) Work Thought Interference, and (3) Work Role Dominance. In addition, the present research supported five of eight research propositions assessing the construct validity of the CIW. Specifically, the results indicate a positive association between the CIW and work-to-life conflict, work centrality, and burnout, and a negative relationship with job satisfaction, and life satisfaction. Conversely, the results did not support the suggested hypotheses tying the CIW to turnover intentions, and to selected demographic characteristics (namely gender and level of family demands). The implications of these results for work-life balance research and practice are discussed, and an agenda for future research is presented.Subjects--Topical Terms:
