Fire fighters face extreme physical and mental stressors inherent to their chosen occupation. The dangers of fire fighting cannot be fully controlled or avoided. Vast advancements in the areas of exercise testing and prescription have been made that can significantly impact the health and fitness of fire fighters. The establishment of the optimal dose of training for strength development and strategies for effective variation of the training stimulus are examples of such advancements. In the past, most of the advancements, including the application of the scientific method for examining issues related to health and performance, have been conducted and applied to athletic populations. This dissertation is a compilation of research and applications to fire fighter health and fitness. While fire fighters have some things in common with athletes and members of the general population, it is important that they receive specific attention due to various differences in occupational hazards.Subjects--Topical Terms:

A number of examinations were completed to analyze the demands of fire fighting tasks as well as to apply advanced concepts of exercise science to fire fighter physical conditioning and health promotion. Based on the results of these investigations it was concluded that (1) fire fighters must develop and maintain high levels of physical fitness, (2) such levels of conditioning can be accomplished through advanced, science-based and individualized exercise prescription, and (3) physical conditioning may occur while the fire fighter is on-duty as long as such conditioning is not at a high-intensity.
