Thesis (D.M.A.)--The University of Texas at Austin, 1998.
The earliest musical contact between the western world and China can be traced to missionaries in the 1600. But the total acceptance of western music in China began around 1927, with the first music college was founded in Shanghai where western musical instruments, music theory, compositional technique and musical training systems were used. Prior to that time, Japan had the most complete western musical knowledge of its day. Because of its geographic convenience, many Chinese musicians chose to travel to Japan to receive their advanced training. Chiang Wen-yeh lived in Japan for his young adult life, and gained his initial musical fame there. Later, he returned to China to explore his cultural roots, and dedicated himself to teaching and composing.

This treatise is an investigation of Chiang Wen-yeh's compositional style, his life and the political conditions around him which shaped his work. It also gives a general introduction to his entire range of piano compositions. Finally, his largest composition, Folk Festival Poem is explored both musically and texturally in order to understand, through analysis, the auditory and visual images with which the composer sought to convey his impressions of Chinese folk culture.

The importance of this master work is in these impressions. Until this time, little had filtered out of China in regards to the folk ways of the common people as opposed to the culture of the High Court. Chiang Wen-yeh introduced to the world the everyday lives and folk festivals of his people. Through studying this master work, a greater appreciation of the common Chinese people can be gained by all who listen to it.
