Historically, women in China have long been at the bottom of the social order. However, great changes have taken place since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949. That government claimed Chinese women "hold up half the sky" and needed to be emancipated. An essential element in women's progress toward equality has been their expanded access to all types and all levels of education. The experiences and status of female teachers in higher education is symbolic in many ways for all Chinese women.

In this dissertation, I study the role of women in higher education in China. The argument I am making is that although women have made significant gains in education at all levels, their greater participation is marred by a combination of cultural, socioeconomic, and psychological factors which influence the fundamental choices they have made--choices which seem to be free but are to a large extent influenced by others concerning their personal and occupational future. It should not be surprising to find among women academics a certain ambivalence and uneasiness with their own achievements. For instance, issues of professional opportunity and social recognition, academic careers and marriage and family relationships present areas of stress and concern for many female scholars.

In order to pursue the issues outlined above, a research design was created that utilized interviews, documents and correspondence. Interviews composed of open-ended questions were conducted with 20 female faculty members in two groups based on a referred sampling procedure. One group was 10 women instructors in a normal university in Shanghai; the other was 10 female individuals who used to be instructors in various universities and colleges in China, but who now were students at Teachers College, Columbia University. In analyzing the data, the respondents were grouped according to age, rank and experience. Given the nature of the sampling procedure and the small sample size, no claim to generalizability can be made. Nonetheless, the interviews personalize the more general discussion and provide insight into the experience of female academics.

Economic development may promote women's liberation but it cannot fully improve their status. Continued government support for women's issues dealing with structural changes as well as legislative action is required. Additionally, if women want to achieve liberation, they must depend on their own actions. It is most important for women to improve their education and skills and prepare themselves psychologically to compete with men in work and politics.
