This study focuses on the careers, roles and contributions of Asian-born scholars in US academe to the international knowledge system. Asian scholars are important for study in order to understand patterns involving the international movement of highly-educated personnel from the stage of learning to that of production and dissemination of knowledge and technology in the changing context of the world economy. This study employed in-depth interviewing as the methodology for data collection. Forty-six Asian scholars from six Asian countries--China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, in three major research universities in New York state were interviewed.Subjects--Topical Terms:

This study finds the following: First, Asian scholars are identified by their tripartite role in the international knowledge system as learners, producers and distributors of knowledge and technology. The role of Asian scholars illustrates the international division of labor in knowledge production and dissemination in relation to the uneven development of higher education systems and research environments. Second, in US academe, Asian scholars view themselves primarily as researchers rather than teachers or administrators. Third, Asian scholars' scientific relationships with their countries of origin are based on the supply-demand formula in the use of knowledge and technology. The association of supply and demand reflects the changing economic and political domains in their respective countries.

Results suggest that Asian-born scholars in US academe are a valuable resource for facilitating economic, political and academic contacts between the US and Asian countries. The roles of Asian faculty in the US higher education system are increasing in the fields of science and engineering where they have contributed to advancing science and technology. Asian academics in the humanities and social sciences have also played a significant part in encouraging cultural exchange and broadening of perspectives in the academy and society.
